What is a spider joint?

The spider type rigid universal joint, also known as the common universal joint, is a kind of non-constant velocity universal joint. It allows the maximum included angle of two adjacent shafts to be 15 ° - 20 °. It is mainly used in the transmission shaft or steering transmission mechanism between the transmission and the drive axle.

The spider rigid universal joint is mainly composed of spider, universal joint fork and bearing. The holes on the two universal joint forks are sleeved on the four journals of the spider. A needle bearing and sleeve are installed between the cross shaft journal and the universal joint fork hole, and the screw and bearing cover with locking plate are used to make the axial positioning. In order to lubricate the bearing, an oil passage is drilled in the spider and connected with the oil nozzle and safety valve. In order to avoid grease flowing out and dirt entering the bearing, the inner end of the cross shaft journal is covered with oil seal. The function of the safety valve is to open the valve and the grease overflows when the grease pressure in the inner chamber of the spider exceeds the allowable value, so that the oil seal will not be damaged due to high oil pressure. Most modern cars use rubber oil seals. Excess grease overflows from the contact between the inner surface of the oil seal and the cross shaft journal, so there is no need to install a safety valve.
